On 23 and 24 October 2024, the SAIA project hosted a conference under the theme “Climate Adaptation as a Catalyst for Innovation and Growth in Industry”. The conference took place at the Eskom Academy of Learning in Midrand, and was presented as a dedicated industry-focused track at SANEDI’s Annual Energy Conference
Highlighting the need for an organic and holistic approach to climate change adaptation, the conference showcased a wide range of products and services from different industries and stakeholders within the sector, demonstrating the importance of interconnectness to the transition to a sustainable green economy.
Key experts and stakeholders concurred on the critical importance of industries preparing for and responding to the impacts of climate change, not just as a matter of survival, but as a catalyst for innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth. By embracing new business models, harnessing innovative technologies, and fostering stronger partnerships, it was agreed that industries can lead the way towards a sustainable future.
The conference was also used as a platform to share the outcomes and impact of the SAIA project, exemplifying how strategic partnerships—between governments, industries, academia, and international organizations—can create tangible results in fostering greener, more resilient industries. Speakers and delegates agreed that this collaborative approach is crucial to South Africa’s ability to transition towards a low-carbon economy while addressing the pressing challenges of climate change.
The following were some of the main takeaways from the conference:
- Adaptation is not optional; it is urgent. Climate change impacts are already disrupting industries and communities. The need to build climate resilience into every sector is no longer just a forward-thinking goal but an immediate requirement.
- Collaboration and capacity building are essential. Industries must work closely with governments, academia, and financial institutions to innovate, adopt new technologies, and develop the skills needed to thrive in an evolving landscape.
- Green financing, policy support, and localized solutions will be vital in enabling industries to manage resource constraints and mitigate risks associated with climate adaptation. It is important to ensure financial models that support adaptation projects and scale them to broader sectors.
